Web-fed converting process

By bringing together over seventy years of printing experience with an equal length of time at the forefront of conversion technology, BOBST is able to offer web-fed converting lines that lead the way in accuracy and performance. These lines appeal to carton manufacturers who split their web-fed production process into two parts: first printing and rewinding, then taking the pre-printed reels and converting them offline.

The approach allows for a rapid response to market changes and can help maximize the use of plant capacity and installed equipment. By constantly developing new technology for offline conversion, from high speed die-cutters to remote diagnostics, BOBST is able to offer end users equipment that keeps them ahead of their competitors.

Carton web-fed converting process

Web-fed converting refers to the in-line, post-printing, transformation of a reel of material, normally carton-board or paper. The process is typically used in the cigarette packaging, liquid carton, and general folding carton industries.

Converting units

Essentially the process consists of taking a reel of pre-printed carton board or paper and passing it through a number of different processes depending on the end users' markets. These may include die-cutting, punching, creasing/scoring, embossing/de-bossing, and piling, sheeting or rewinding. A number of units deliver these processes, including:

  • Rotary die-cutter:  suited to high volumes, such as those in the tobacco or liquid packaging industries
  • Flat-bed die-cutter:  delivering high levels of flexibility for medium to long runs, the flat bed process is mainly used in general folding carton production
  • Sheeter: converting the printed web into individual sheets, this unit allows for further processing such as hot-foil stamping, silk screen printing, offset overprinting or further die-cutting
  • Rewinder: delivering the web to a reel allows further reel-to-reel processing such as adding value to soft pack cigarettes packaging and labels

BOBST expertise and knowledge

BOBST web-fed converting lines can be configured to meet the exact needs of the end user and by ensuring the optimization of every part of the converting process offer outstanding cut-to-crease, print-to-cut, and print-to-emboss accuracy, along with handling options to meet every in-plant need.
