Security printing

The world market for security printing was valued at $29.78 billion in 2019 to $36.0 billion by 2024 (1) at a CAGR of over 4.5% during the forecast period 2021 - 2026. Asia represented almost 50% of the global market for security printing and developing countries show the highest growth. Banknotes is the largest segment.

Without security printing, banknotes, checks, passports, ID cards, branded pharmaceuticals and designer goods would all be at the mercy of counterfeiters. Working with paper, film and carton board, printers offering security protection use a wide variety of printing and converting processes.

Around the globe, security applications includes gravure and offset printing, lamination, selective metallization, die-cutting, embossing, hot foil & hologram stamping and specific folding & gluing methods.

Trends

Banknotes, just under 40% of world market share, are showing a declining rate of growth in terms of volume. This is compensated by higher prices charged for durable banknotes and premium security features. The major shift in demand from central banks is for longer lasting currency made possible either by improved varnishing or the use of paper-polymer composites or wholly plastic notes.

For the tax stamp end-use segment a surge in demand is anticipated as global and European track-and-trace regulations are implemented.

With new digital technologies rising, the market share of security features is changing. Biometric technologies such as fingerprint scanning and facial recognition are new features implemented by the leading players.

Tax stamps are scheduled to experience explosive growth during 2015-2020 due to the implementation of new requirements for cigarettes deriving from implementations of the World Health Organization’s 2003 Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the European Union’s 2014 revision of its Tobacco Products Directive.

Paper stamps with security features such as micro-lettering are widely used, but also widely counterfeited. Taggants will take a share of the market growth but are expected to be less in demand than digital technologies. Watermarks as a security printing technology will disappear in this application across the next five years.
