Slovakian Bóna LABELS, which celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2025, has added a third BOBST flexo machine to its production floor. Featuring a multilayer QN3 module, the new MASTER M5 inline label press has given the company access to new markets, allowing it to deliver additional value for customers.
Located in Nové Zámky, east of the capital Bratislava, Bóna is one of the leading label printing companies in the Slovak Republic. It remains in the hands of the Bóna family, with both the son and daughter of founder Bertalan Bóna having joined the management team in recent years.
Operating since 2005, Bóna LABELS specializes in printing self-adhesive labels in short to long runs, reaching customers beyond the Slovakian borders in Hungary, Czech Republic, Austria, and further afield. The customers can be found in the cosmetics, food (mainly bakery, dairy and meat), wine & spirits, chemical, industrial and logistics sectors.
A close partnership started in 2012 when Bóna installed its first inline flexo press for label printing from BOBST. This was quickly followed by a second BOBST machine two years later. Testament to their reliability and efficiency, both printing presses are still part of the company’s core inventory, producing high-quality labels every day. Recently, a highly automated and digitalized BOBST MASTER M5 label press with multilayer capability and UV LED curing has joined the factory line up.
“The excellent relationship we’ve maintained over the years with the BOBST team in Firenze meant that we had no doubt which partner to choose for our new investment,” explained Mr Bóna. “Of course, we also tested the technology because we needed to expand our capabilities into coupon and multilayer labels. The advanced MASTER M5 from BOBST with a special module for multilayer labels could offer us that and more.”
Expanding capacity and capabilities
Utilizing their expertise and special finishing processes such as embossing, hot- and cold stamping, and screen printing, Bóna LABELS provides high-quality, embellished products, adding significant value for customers. The comprehensive service also includes an in-house design department further supporting customers in bringing their label solutions to market.
In 2023, the company decided to invest in more flexo capacity and a contract for a BOBST MASTER M5 was signed during Labelexpo Europe. Installed in early 2024, the new label press is a 370mm-wide, 8 color machine, equipped with UV LED curing, DigiFlexo automatic register and pressure control, and a camera inspection system. Notably, the highly automated press has been configured with a QN3 coupon module for multilayer/booklet labels. This allows these complex constructions to be printed and constructed in a single pass on the same machine, thereby removing bottlenecks in production and saving considerable time.
“We’re experiencing a strong market demand for coupon labels. It was one of the main reasons for the new investment with BOBST. By printing and converting in a single pass, we can now meet this demand on a much shorter timescale, helping brand owners get to market sooner,” explained Mr Bóna.
Increasing sustainability and speed
The ability to provide customers with eco-friendly labels was another key factor influencing the choice of press for Bóna LABELS. Powered by UV LED curing, the new BOBST MASTER M5 offers a more sustainable process. Compared to traditional Arc lamps, LED technology uses less energy and produces more consistent curing which in turn creates less waste. Meanwhile, the high level of automation in job setup and changeovers also reduces waste and production time for even more savings.
“In the BOBST MASTER M5, we found all the attributes we were searching for: versatility, functionality, digitalization and robustness. This investment means we can better respond to the market demands for high quality, speed and sustainability, meeting all our clients’ requirements,” Mr Bóna concluded, adding: “Thanks to the MASTER M5, we have doubled our monthly output, and we can now produce applications that we were not previously able to offer our customers. Returning to our trusted partner BOBST was most definitely the right choice.”
David Colombini, Services Sales Director in BOBST, said: “The continued loyalty of long-term customers speaks volumes about their satisfaction with both the equipment and the service provided by BOBST. For Bóna LABELS, the MASTER M5 label press with multilayer functionality is the ideal solution. This advanced machine enables the company to tackle complex jobs with ease, expanding its reach and positioning it for a very profitable future.”
