Clothing & textile

The global textile market size was projected at $1000.3 billion in 2020 and is expected to expand at a CAGR of 4.4% from 2021 to 2028 (1)

The clothing and textiles market is typically segmented between materials (cotton, chemical, wool, silk) by products (Natural-Fibers, Polyester, Nylon) and by application (Household, Technical, Fashion & Clothing).

Rising disposable income, urbanization and overall population growth is expected to drive the demand for textile products. At the same time, fast fashion, smart textiles and new customer life styles and behaviors are shaping a new industry landscape.

The development of online clothes shopping across the globe is driving additional requirements for the packaging industry. Products are travelling further across the world than ever before and in greater numbers as well. With such an increase in shipping volumes and the amount of time, organic products can potentially be spoiled and expensive products can suffer damages. New techniques and materials are being required.

Boxing and unboxing is no longer a new concept. Thanks to the collection of data, so called big data, it is possible and more important than ever to truly customize the unboxing and delivery experiences to consumers. This can include things like new packaging styles even printed inside, various container choices, inclusion of a personalized card or gift based on purchasing patterns. It has driven box manufacturers to come up with new solutions.

Trends

The global technical textiles market is expected to grow from $28.99 billion in 2016 to reach $42.3 billion by 2022 (1) with a CAGR of 6.4%. This segment is driven by technological innovations supporting a raising demand from new applications where new physical properties of technical textiles makes a major difference.

When looking at packaging for clothing and textile, folding carton and labels are the primary items produced. While labels are on almost every item, big and small, thin or thick, bags are the most popular packaging. With consumers increasingly aware of the impact of packaging globally and brand owners conscious of the impact of single use packaging, more and more bags are paper based and the plastic ban has accelerated this trend. To allow brands to convey their values and messages, we see major innovation in paper bag design and printing but as well higher demand for complex folding. Some bags are indeed fashionable items.

Small items (socks, underwear, bras, etc) packed for retail sales are primarily using folding carton with complex cuttings and folding patterns. Pouches are growing for some special and high-end product categories willing to differentiate (e.g. swim suits, underwear).

Smart clothing, like the wearables market is just getting started. Many companies are currently focusing on smart health and fitness clothing transforming the market as smart clothing develops with more sensors, applications and moves from niche users to the mass market. This will have a direct impact on the packaging where new customer information (usage, connectivity, washing) will need to be communicatedt.

Packaging has been reduced to its absolute essentials. Consumers don’t want to remove layer after layer to get to their purchase. Simple and clean, functional and pretty seem to be the direction that packaging design is moving in. Not everything needs a box, and not everything needs an abundance of void fill.
