Following on from being accredited as a Bronze Level Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) by The Carbon Literacy Project last year, Bobst Manchester has now moved up to the next level, achieving Silver accreditation.
This is a great achievement and shows dedication to reducing carbon emissions across the organisation and commitment to working towards a zero carbon future.
Bobst Manchester started their Carbon Literacy journey back in 2023 with an ambitious target to achieve Bronze by the following year; with a lot of hard work this was achieved, and the aim then was to work towards the Silver award. Now a year on, Bobst Manchester has been presented with the Silver Award at an awards ceremony in Manchester, UK in June.
A lot of work has gone into achieving the Silver award starting with the appointment of Gwyneth Spence, PhD Student in Advanced Materials and Surface Engineering at Bobst Manchester as Carbon Literacy Trainer. Training began in June 2024 delivering three face-to-face, one day training sessions across different areas of the business ranging from electrical engineering to accounting; to date 41% of the workforce have been trained.
Additionally, there has been a change in the organisational mindset and a Sustainability Committee of employees has been formed to find ways to promote sustainability and Carbon Literacy within Bobst Manchester. Several initiatives have already been put in place such as the installation of solar panels on the factory roof, the changing of all lights in the factory and office area to motion sensors which turn off automatically, replacing diesel/petrol company cars with fully electric vehicles and setting up a car share scheme for employees. In the Competence Centre, waste is being recycled and in the last year alone, up to 40 tonnes has been recycled. To fully immerse the workforce in Carbon Literacy, the company plans to take part in the Carbon Literacy Action Day in 2025.
Commenting on the achievement, Nick Copeland, R&D Director (Barrier Solutions) at Bobst Manchester said “The Carbon Literacy Project has been a great match for our sustainability journey by increasing the knowledge across our workforce. I am very proud to share that following the Carbon Literacy Training over 40% of our cross functional workforce from the production team, through to engineering, sales and even our site manager have completed the training. Carbon Literacy completes the picture of embedding sustainability and carbon savings within our company culture and vision.”
David Coleman, Co-Founder/Managing Director of The Carbon Literacy Project said “Carbon Literacy is an essential skill, vital to every workplace. By becoming a silver accredited Carbon Literate Organisation, Bobst Manchester has demonstrated its commitment to genuine low carbon action, environmental and economic impact and the building of a low carbon future for us all”.
A Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) has been accredited by The Carbon Literacy Project as being “culturally Carbon Literate”, meaning a substantial portion of its workforce are Carbon Literate. CLO accreditation is a tiered system with bronze, silver and gold levels, requiring increasing levels of commitment to action on climate change and creating a low-carbon culture.
