Max Specialty Films’ Award Winning Metallized Barrier Film Produced Using BOBST AluBond®

Max Specialty Films Limited (MSFL) have had a relationship with BOBST of over 20 years; most recently ordering two new metallizers to take their total number to five

Both new metallizers are BOBST EXPERT K5 2450’s, one machine with AluBond® and the new AlOx GEN II process is already installed and the second which incorporates AluBond® is due to be delivered later this year.

AIMCAL Technology of the Year Award
Utilizing the AluBond® process in conjunction with In Line Coating on the Brueckner film line, the existing BOBST EXPERT K5 2450 is used to produce Max Specialty Film’s metallized BOPP barrier film family named OB5 which has this year won an AIMCAL Technology of the Year Award. Originally developed as a process to increase metal bond strength on all substrates, when applied to BOPP, AluBond® also gives enhanced oxygen and water vapor barrier.

AlOx GEN II for Transparent High Barrier BOPP
MSFL were the first company to invest in BOBST new AlOx GEN II process. The BOBST AlOx process developed for PET has been very successful in the market for nearly 15 years. The current demand in the market for high barrier, transparent, mono-material packaging meant that the process needed to be further developed.

The AlOx GEN II process officially launched at an open house in 2019 has been developed primarily for the BOPP market and provides a better barrier performance at reduced optical density with transparency straight off the machines resulting in a high barrier AlOx BOPP. This offers a solution to meet sustainability requirements and in combination with the right BOPP film shows great potential for a fully transparent barrier PP mono-material packaging solution.

Mr Navneet Malhotra, Head of Plant at Max Specialty Film commented “We are very happy to have won the AIMCAL award and the AluBond® process is an integral part of that. We are extremely happy with our BOBST EXPERT K5 and look forward to the second one being installed later this year further increasing our capacity for production of metallized BOPP”
